This is the headquarters of the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW), created to protect the rare Rothschild’s giraffe. These magnificent creatures, once numbering only about 130 in the wild, have bounced back thanks to the breeding program here.

Travel Itinerary

- Pick-up from Hotel/Residence Your friendly Mercytrek tours driver-guide will pick you up from your location within Nairobi in a clean, comfortable, private tour vehicle. Enjoy the drive toward the outskirts of the city towards the Ngong Hills.
- Arrival and Orientation (Approx. 45 mins transit) Arrive at the Giraffe Centre. Your driver will assist you to the entrance (entry fees are payable directly by client—see below).
- The Giraffe Encounter (1 to 1.5 Hours) This is the main event. You will climb up to a specially designed, elevated wooden platform that puts you right at eye level with the giraffes.

Hand Feeding: Educators at the centre will provide you with small pellets of food. The resident giraffes know the drill and will eagerly stretch their long necks toward you.

The Kiss: Prepare to encounter their famous 18-inch long, purple-blue tongues, which feel like rough sandpaper. If you are brave enough, you can place a pellet between your lips for the famous "giraffe kiss" photo!

Education: The on-site educators are incredibly knowledgeable. Learn about giraffe behavior, why their tongues are purple, and the successful conservation efforts to save the Rothschild sub-species.
- Short Coffee Break- After the giraffe centre have a short coffee / lunch break at one ofthe shops which also sells souvenirs at an affordable price.
- Visit to Kobe Beads Factory- A truly inspiration place with impressive handmade ceramic beads, beautiful leather purses and stunning beaded belts. Its a unique factory as it employs single parents from the neighborhood who earn a living to support their families.
- Departure and Drop-off After you have had your fill of giraffe selfies and visited the gift shop and Kobe Beads Factory your driver will be waiting to take you back to your hotel or residence in Nairobi.

We will begin our tour at 9:00 AM driving towards the Giraffe centre where you will learn more about the conversation efforts to conserve an endangered species and also enjoy watching the giraffes as they roam around. After that you may have time to visit Kobe Beads Factory (OPTIONAL). A truly inspiration place with impressive handmade ceramic beads, beautiful leather purses and stunning beaded belts. Its a unique factory as it employs single parents from the neighborhood who earn a living to support their families. Later you will be driven to your hotel for drop off while you embark with memories.
